“Remember, a shawl can cover more than skin.” - the Cailleach in Daniel Allison’s Taming the Kelpie

Knitting shawls is a big love of mine. I design the shawls that come through me using traditional shapes and lace patterns, as well as lace designed by modern knitters, including my own.

I’ve been knitting shawls since 2005. They have always felt like magical, talismanic garments to me. I’ve knit them for loved ones mourning the loss of their partners, for protection during ritual, for protection walking through the world(s), for a sense of love and comfort and connection. The embrace of a shawl is a tangible reminder that we are held by the universe, however precarious that may feel at times.

This Marigold and Hibiscus shawl was hand knit over 35 hours with a mohair and silk blended lace weight wool dyed with Marigold and Hibiscus flowers. It is light and airy and still adds but so warm and cozy on a chill day. It measures approximately* 110” across at the top of the triangle and 50” down the center.

*Shawl measurements can vary depending on how recently they’ve been blocked. Right after blocking they will be at their largest and gradual get a little smaller as the knit relaxes.

Care Instructions:

As with all botanically dyed fiber, for the most longevity wash sparingly by hand with a gentle, pH neutral soap. With hand knit lace, it is important to block your shawl after you wash it:

After washing, gently squeeze as much water as you can out of your shawl. Then wrap in a towel and jump up and down on it to get as much water out as possible. Then spread out your shawl in a safe place over top a sheet or dry towels on a flat surface until completely flat and arrange it until the lace pattern look open and crisp and it is a good size. Let the shawl lay like this until completely dry.

Wear carefully, it is easy to snag hand knitting!! If a thread breaks and forms a hole, try to secure the loose threads in a knot to stop the hole spreading bigger. Mend with whatever method you choose, or contact me and we can work something out! Some knitters can mend holes by recreating the lace pattern, I am not one of them!! But I can mend up the hole and make the threads safe again. I cannot guarantee it will be with the same yarn, but the hole will be mended.
