How These Came About
Ah, 1970s core, when everybody wanted to be a cat. Maybe. I don't know, because I wasn't born yet. But I watched this movie 8,072 times when VCRs came around. Later in life, I forced my kids to watch it and... they were not impressed. It aged poorly, didn't it? It is awfully racist and full of stereotypes that went completely over my head in the '80s. So, we had a long talk about learning from those mistakes. (I recently read that Disney now has a content warning before the film.) Out of habit, I still quote the non-awful parts of the movie all the time, many years later: "Nothin' more but a little ol' cricket bug." "Ladies do not start fights, but they can finish them!" "Wait a minute. I'm the leader! I'm the one that says when we go!" (Great parenting line.) Marie was my favorite because I understood being insufferable.
